Monday night marked my first class (of 8) at the NYSC specialty program UXF. The (very) small group training took place in a blocked off part of the gym. A lot of this session was learning technique (for push ups, pull ups, sit ups and squats), and then we used our newly acquired skills to complete a “Tabata” which uses 20 seconds of ultra-intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated continuously for 4 minutes (8 cycles). For example, I’d do the 8 cycles of push ups, then have a 1 minute break, then move on to 8 cycles of sit ups, 1 minute break, etc, until we did all four moves.
After completing the Tabata cycle we went outside to do suicide-type sprints. I don’t typically have the motivation to do sprints so this is a perfect place for me to work on my speed.
Overall I’d say the class was pretty tame. I didn’t leave sore or out of breath but I felt like I worked. Because it was the first session I do expect it to get much harder along the way. Tonight is session #2, I’ll let you know how it goes!
