Friday Fitness: An Update on Travel Workouts & a Full Body HIIT Workout

HIIT Workout

Happy Friday everyone! For the first weekend in a while we’ll be laying low and not traveling. We’re still figuring out our actual plans but it’s definitely going to be low key. Maybe a beach day as it’s been super hot here in the city–I haven’t felt this kind of heat since leaving NYC almost two years ago (SF does not do summer, it’s very strange).

You know I love to travel, but it’s good to have a relaxed at-home weekend every once in a while. The past few weeks have been go-go-go. First I spent a week in Greece with four of our friends visiting from the US. After that, just three days later I took a trip through Rioja, Biarritz and San Sebastian.

Needless to say, all of this travel has impacted my healthy routine. Even though it was possible to eat healthy in all (most?) of these places (if you reallllly tried), for the most part I didn’t. No regrets though, the food in each of these spots was incredible. And what about working out? Yea, that slid too. During these trips I stayed in 5 different hotels/Airbnbs and none of them had a gym. Instead, I went on one run, played tennis one day and walked a ton. And that’s it. And that’s okay. In hindsight I wish I fit in a few mini workouts here and there but what’s done is done.

But now that I’m back in Barcelona I hit the ground running to get back to my workouts. The first day back (Monday) was a tough one. My body felt tired, slow and weak. Instead of getting upset with myself, I accepted that the vacation days happened and I’d have to take it easy. I did my entire workout, just slower and less intense than I normally would. Day by day I’ve felt more on track and more energized.

Returning from vacation can be tough. You want to jump back exactly where you left off and kick butt in your workouts. If you have the energy to do that–awesome, go for it. But remember it’s okay to ease back into things. Always listen to your body first and foremost. You’ll get back to where you were, it just might take a day or two.

And now a little workout to go along with this. I’m still not always the best at sticking to fitness while traveling, but it IS really possible. Even if you don’t have equipment and maybe don’t have a lot of time, you can keep your body moving. Sometimes that’s going for long walks. If you want something a little more challenging, today’s workout is for you.

I shared my Full Body HIIT Workout on DCRefined earlier this week. Take a look and try it out on your next trip or whenever you’re short on time and want a quick calorie burn. If you have a yoga mat that helps, but you can also use a towel or a grassy spot outside.

Enjoy it!
