5 Tips to Get Your Workout In, Even While Traveling

Travel Workout Tips Barcelona

Last week I chatted about some of my struggles with working out while traveling. Since getting my workout in makes my trips more enjoyable, I’ve found ways to make it happen, whether it’s a touristy run or checking out a new boutique studio.

My first tip is to not take yourself or your workout routine so seriously. Unless you’re training for a specific event or prepping for a big occasion, cut yourself some slack and enjoy your trip without worrying too much about your workouts. Easier said than done as I definitely feel guilty feelings creep in when I take too many days off, but I’m working on it!

If you struggle to fit fitness into your travel routine, here’s how to make it happen in a way you’ll enjoy:

Wake Up Early

Don’t let your workouts get in the way of your travel plans. Wake up earlier than your travel companions and do your workout first thing. All you really need is 20-30 minutes of movement to get your day started on the right foot. In Amsterdam I was able to do all my workouts before meeting up with my family for breakfast.

Run to Explore the City

Google the best scenic running routes or sign up for a running tour of the city. Do your run early to avoid crowds and to get the best views of landmarks that may otherwise be crowded with tourists. One of my favorite runs was through Copenhagen. No crowds, amazing views and a quick way to see a lot of sights.

Sign Up for a Boutique Class

I love trying new classes and this is extra interesting in new countries or cities. You can feel like a true local by attending a class, plus it’s a good opportunity to meet locals or other travelers. I’ve done spin in Spain, barre in Amsterdam and Barry’s in Stockholm. All super fun experiences. Beware of the language barrier. Some classes can be surprisingly easy to follow along with in a different language, but if there’s an english option, that’s your safest bet.

Prepare for the Hotel Gym

If you’re not used to creating your own routines, hotel gyms can be challenging. There are tons of printable workouts online (like my Friday Fitness workouts!). Find one you like in advance so you’re prepped before you even get to the hotel.

Sign Up for a Race

This is an amazing way to experience the energy of a city. Big races, like marathons and half marathons can definitely impact your travel plans (sleep schedules, eating certain foods, soreness afterwards), but are still worth considering for the experience. If that’s too intense (which for many trips it is!), look for a 5 or 10k to join.

Up Your Steps

If a workout isn’t going to happen, at least get your steps in. Instead of taking public transportation, do your sightseeing by foot. If you’re in a not-so-walkable location, do some loops around the hotel, always take the stairs, and when you’re at the airport, don’t sit and wait for your flight, instead walk loops around the terminal. Those steps add up!

Now you tell me, do you like to workout while traveling? And if you’ve got any travel fitness tips to add, please share!
