Life Chat: What I’m Up to in SF

It’s been nearly a month since I gave you a glimpse at life in SF and I think it’s time for an update! Some days I feel like I’m doing a million things, and then other days I’m asking myself what I’m accomplishing. It’s been very strange to not have the steady routine of heading to an office every day. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have a freelance lifestyle, doing a mix of teaching and blogging. I won’t say I’m quite there yet making it a career, but things are in motion.

Teaching-wise, I’m at Orangetheory for 11 classes a week and I’m subbing various classes at Equinox and hopefully will get a permanent schedule there soon.

When I’m not teaching, I’m writing, blogging, working out and continuing to plan our wedding (3 months to go!). I’m going to give this freelance schedule a try and see how I like it. I have a feeling it may be a “grass is always greener” situation as steady office jobs certainly have their perks, as does the flexibility of working from home. When I feel unsure about where I’m at, I remind myself that we just got here and it will take time to settle into a routine.

Enough about work. I’m also trying to get out and enjoy San Francisco! We’ve had some visitors and I look forward to more heading this way. We’ve visited the Golden Gate Bridge, spent a day in Sonoma and explored Fort Funston. Like any good Californian, I’ve been hitting up farmer’s markets at least once a week. The produce here is so fresh. In past years I’ve listened to my Cali friends talk about how much better the fruit and veggies are over here compared with NYC and I chose to ignore them. Well, now I can say they were right.

During the week I’ve been finding myself staying near home a lot –it’s way easier to stay in our little bubble of a neighborhood than going out to explore but I’m going to make a bigger effort to travel further from home and experience more of what SF has to offer. If you have any favorite sights, restaurants, activities, leave them in the comments below please!

I’m loving some things about our new life here. Simple pleasures that I never had in New York City, like a washer and dryer in our apartment, a closet that fits all my clothes and has room to spare, a gym/pool/hot tub in our complex and the ability to easily jump in our car to explore. If you’ve never lived in NYC you probably don’t understand the joy that all of these somewhat basic things can bring to a person.

Of course I miss a lot about New York, most of all my friends and the ease of every day life since I’d lived there so long and had my routine. Big changes take time and now is a time of transition.  I know I’m lucky to have MM and Ollie to make the transition a bit easier, but it’s still tough!

I’ll keep you updated with little life chats on the blog. Until next time!
