Cycle for Survival 2016 + Race Training Update

March 14, 2016

Cycle for survival

Sunday wrapped up Cycle for Survival 2016 and I was lucky enough to lead one of the closing sessions. Along with 3 fellow Equinox instructors, we hosted four hours of cycling to a huge group of 150+ bikes, and waaaay more riders swapping bikes throughout the four hours.

This was my third year leading a session and it’s one of the more nerve-wracking classes to teach (so many people! so much pressure!) but also one of the most rewarding. The energy is electric and the event is incredibly powerful. So far this year, Cycle for Survival has raised over $29 million! All of it goes directly to rare cancer research and throughout the event, attendees get the opportunity to hear touching stories of those impacted by the money raised. If you haven’t done Cycle for Survival, put it on your radar for 2017 and join the battle.

As an instructor, you need to keep the energy going and a top notch playlist is a must. Here’s mine from this year:

  • Something in the Way you Move, Ellie Goulding
  • Wild Things, Alessia Cara
  • Work this Body, Walk the Moon
  • Run The World, Kaskade Club Remix, Beyonce
  • Circus, Diplo Remix, Brittany Spears
  • Light it Up, Andy Duguid Remix, Romeo Testa
  • New York Groove, Ace Frehley
  • Habits, The Chainsmokers Remix, Tove Lo
  • All These Thing That I’ve Done, The Killers
  • Bulletproof, Tiborg Remix, La Roux
  • Best Day of My Life, Gazzo Remix, American Authors
  • Magic, Coldplay

A huge thank you to Equinox, Memorial Sloan Kettering, all the riders and all the donors!

And even though I was on a bike for almost 4 hours yesterday, it’s not getting in the way of my half marathon training! Looking back at last week, I did every workout except the yoga/pilates/barre day, which now that I think about it, my body could seriously use. But otherwise, another successful week!

The deserved treat after my 6 miles in Central Park

And as we said, success comes from planning for the week ahead. As I was looking at my calendar  I realized that this week, my normal 2 cycling classes turned into 4. Oops, this will make my half marathon training a little tricky;  here’s the plan (and I’m letting you know where I’m teaching so please join me for a ride!):

  • Monday: Teach 6:30am cycling at Equinox East 33rd
  • Tuesday: Teach 6:30pm cycling at Equinox West 67th
  • Wednesday: Teach 6:15am cycling at Equinox West 92nd, MetCon3 strength workout
  • Thursday: Teach 6:30am cycling at Equinox Flatiron, 6×400 run speed work
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: 5k at race pace
  • Sunday: Yoga

It’s a busy week, but I still have that ever-important rest day and instead of a long run this weekend, it’s a short and fast 5k.  For those training, wishing you a strong week ahead!
