Last Night’s (Miserable) Run

September 12, 2013

So running when there is a heat advisory is as horrible as it sounds. At 5:30pm I headed out on a run with my coworker and his friend and o.m.g it was so hot. Within a mile we were all drenched in sweat. Our pace started out normal in the low 9’s but that quickly faded as the heat hit us full-force.

After just 2.5 miles I could tell this wouldn’t be a great run (let’s be real, I realized that HOURS in advance) so the goal of the night was to FINISH the run. Pace was of no concern. The big concern was staying hydrated and even if it took walking (and it did) as long as all the miles were complete, it would be considered a success.

Our miles ranged greatly in pace from 9:12 all the way up to 16:36 (bathroom break for some, water purchasing, fuel belt refilling, etc). Whenever we stopped to walk or get water we could feel heat radiating off our bodies. My running partners for the night are on a different training schedule so at mile 10 we parted ways (they were headed south for a 20-miler and I was headed into Central Park for a 15-miler).

So while the run involved major sweating, pain and nauseous, we did it! Do I recommend running during a heat advisory? Definitely not. But I am glad it is over with!
