Cronut Adventures

Waking up before the sun has risen is a normal occurrence for me. Typically the reason is to go to the gym around 6am but yesterday it was for something quite different, to eat a CRONUT.

MM, Michele and I had been talking about going for an early morning cronut for a while, just to see what all the hype is about. Unsure about the line situation, we arrived at the Dominique Ansel Bakery on Spring St at 6am sharp. We were about 35th in line. The line wasn’t as crazy as I expected but the fact that there is a line anywhere at 6am is crazy in itself.

The waiting wasn’t so bad. We chatted, we read magazines, we drank coffee and the time passed quickly. At 8am the bakery opened and by 8:30 we had cronuts in-hand.

So, how were they? Ok, so they were good. Were they the best dessert I’ve ever eaten in my life? No. The flavor this month is Fig Marscapone which sounds delicious and yea it was, but it was so overpoweringly sweet and decadent that it was just too much. It tasted good and it was a fun experience getting them but if I never eat another cronut in my life, that is A-OK.

We also got a DKA which is basically a really good croissant. I had read online that these might be as good as the cronuts and the three of us agreed it was BETTER than the cronut because it wasn’t insanely sweet.

If you have a major sweet tooth, perhaps you’d like the cronut more than we did. Overall we had a fun morning and if you are up for it, go and get one! If you don’t feel like dealing with the lines and don’t really care about cronuts, go at any time and get a DKA. The bakery is super cute and had tons of delicious looking treats. I also liked how we could see Dominique making the cronuts as we picked ours up.

Moving forward I shall reserve my pre-dawn wake ups for workouts only!
