Recent Readings: Wild & Born to Run

July 24, 2013

I just finished Wild by Cheryl Strayed and really enjoyed it. To put it simply, it’s the true story of when Cheryl (in her 20s) went on a 1,000+ mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail (starting in Cali, heading up to Oregon) with basically no hiking experience. Throughout her hike you read about the details along the trail, but also about her life experiences which drove her to go on this life-changing hike to “find herself”. Cheryl’s description of the hike is so vivid that you feel as if you are hiking alongside her.

I am not a hiker but this made me want to get up and hike (not 1,000 miles…but perhaps 10?). Looks like this is being made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon. Not sure I agree with that casting (love Reese but she is 37 and shouldn’t be playing 26 year old Cheryl).

I highly recommend the book and also suggest picking it up before the movie comes out so you can see the trail through Cheryl’s eyes, as opposed to however the movie is shot.

My next read is Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Seemed like a perfect choice with marathon training underway.
