Getting up pre-work and going for a run is a challenge, especially in the winter. Sometimes I follow through with my plan, other times…not so much. Today was one of the lucky mornings where I did in fact get out of my warm bed and hit Central Park for a 35 degree run. I decided to give my run a little boost to keep things interesting. I stopped at the Bethesda Terrace steps and did 5 rounds of running up and down the stairs before ending my run a little beyond 4 miles.
I’m planning to add this into my runs moving forward, each time increasing the rounds.

If you happen to pass a set of stairs during your runs, toss them into your routine. Running stairs has many benefits, for one, “experts believe it could help your overall speed because the workout engages more leg muscle mass—including hamstrings and gluteals—as they have to lift the body repeatedly. “Stronger muscles are more powerful muscles, and running speed is all about power,” says Boreham”*
No stairs along your run? If you live in an apartment building, instead of taking the elevator back to your place after your run, opt for the stairwell.
