Workout Program Review: DBX3

October 12, 2012

There’s a chill in the air and for those early-AM fitness folks, it’s scary dark in the morning. If I’m working out before I head to the office I’m leaving my apartment around 6am. In the summer that’s not so bad. These days it’s pitch-black out and I’m not a fan. Enter the world of in-home workouts. There’s Insanity, P90X and now there’s something you may not have heard of DBX3. Here’s a rundown of the program. Take a read and see if it sounds right for you.

About DBX3: Designed by Matt Basso, the president of Iron Lotus PT, a wellness company that provides personal training, nutritional counseling and more, The DBX3 Functional Fat Loss System is designed to help people understand and take control of their exercise and nutrition. The 3 month program is made up of strength, conditioning and nutrition to give you the results you want.

What You Get: Everything in this program is digital- once you purchase it you can download everything immediately. Program Includes: The DBX3 Fat Loss Program (made up of 60 workouts), conditioning videos to teach you the moves, fat loss guide, monster mix (motivational music), a program log, a nutrition guide that explains diet concepts, supplementation, nutrient combinations, meal plans and more, and finally a results tracker so you can see how your body is changing and becoming stronger along the way.

Why this program in different: Instead of using DVDs, this program is all digital so it’s great if you have an iPad or tablet- the workout is with you at all times whether you are at a hotel, in your living room, or at the gym (if you’re at the gym and don’t have a conditioning routine, this is a perfect). The listed workouts link to videos if you ever forget how to do a move. The program also has a strong focus on  nutrition which is key. While we’d like to believe that going to the gym will get us slim and trim, doing that alone will not. Eating right is essential to weight loss, not just getting a good sweat. This program’s nutrition guidelines seem hard to follow but if you are really looking for results, this may just be your answer.

About the workouts: Each day is different but most workouts are about 30 minutes to an hour and include moves like push ups, squats, dead-lifts and planks (also cardio!). Because you aren’t just working out along to a video you really do need to keep track of what you’re working on and how each move is done correctly.

And finally, my review: While I have not done the entire program, I’ve tried some of the workouts and have read through the materials. I think that this is a very strong program that if followed would likely yield great results. I think the best parts of this program are that it’s a take-anywhere plan because sometimes I really just want to workout in my living room and not trek to the gym. I also like that there is a strong focus on the nutritional aspect of getting your dream body. The program gives a couple of different meal plans that you can follow (the same thing will not work for everyone!). One of the meal plans includes fasting days which isn’t something that I could handle but for others this might work out. For me, the negatives to this program is that you really have to think about what you’re doing. It’s not a mindless workout, you are really in charge here. What you need to do is down on paper, but you need to figure out what the moves are and remember how to do them all (you can refer back to videos but this isn’t something you want to have to continually do). For people who already know a good deal about fitness this might not be a problem, but for newbies it might be a lot to take in at once. Some of the workouts are a bit confusing but once you are really immersed into the program I bet it becomes clearer.

Overall, this is a program definitely worth looking in to! I plan to continue with some of the workouts and should my schedule allow, I may even try to complete the entire program.
