Winter Blues 21 Day Detox

February 18, 2015

It’s mid-February, it’s freezing, I’m bundling up in countless layers and the thought of being in a bathing suit is miles (and months away). It’s easier for me to stay motivated to eat right and push hard in my workouts when a beach vacation or dress up event is in my future and right now, the future is looking bleak. It’s quite a few months before I have to think about looking and feeling my best and unfortunately, I’ve let that get to me.

I’m not quite as careful about what I eat and while I’m working out, I’m not pushing super hard and I’m not adding in extra ab workouts, I’m just sort of going with the flow. And ya know what? It doesn’t feel good. I’m indulging and that’s fun and all but it leaves me feeling very “blah”. I’m low on energy, my skin is breaking out and I’m sure some of you know the feeling, it’s just “blah."

Ok so enough is enough! I’m over feeling this way, even if it is the dead of winter. Plus, it’s 18 weeks until my Ironman 70.3 (promise I’ll tell you more about this later) and in order to train well I have to eat well and feel my best.

I know I’m not the only one feeling this way and that’s why one of my best friends is joining me on this detox. It’s the same friend who I went to Costa Rica with (ahh back then we had so much motivation!) and we came up with our detox plan together. We’re holding each other accountable and I’m hoping it encourages us to really stick to the plan.

if you’re feeling the winter time blues like us, join us in our detox. Today (Tuesday, 2/17) was day 1 so this morning we weighed ourselves and noted this (sad) number. Our detox will last 3 weeks. For all 21 days we’re cutting out:

  • Dairy
  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • Grains
  • Mindless Snacking

Also, for the first week we are cutting out fruit, a super hard one for me. We’re aiming to drink 1 gallon of water each day, workout 5x per week and get 7 hours of sleep per night (how long have I been claiming I’d do this?). Each Tuesday we’ll do a weigh in and I’ll report how the plan is going.

The best eating plan I’ve done has been Whole30 but I know it isn’t sustainable so this is my new version. I’m not being quite as strict about certain foods and if I make a mistake, it’s not back to day 1, I’ll be continuing on. I’m trying to cut out processed foods and cook real, whole foods as much as possible.

So today ends Day 1 of this lil detox. Stay tuned to hear how it goes.
