While I was living in Spain I had been reading about ButcherBox via blogs and Instagram for a few months and was intrigued by the frozen meat delivery service. Obviously they didn’t deliver to Barcelona, so I had to wait until I was back in the US to give it a try.
It was one of the first things I signed up for when we had a permanent Portland address and I figured I’d do it for one month, get the freebies associated with your first box and then likely cancel…because the truth is, it’s pretty pricey. But then the first box arrived and I was instantly hooked.
About ButcherBox and the Cost
Let’s back up and quickly review the ins and outs of ButcherBox. It’s a frozen meat delivery service that ships boxes either every month or every other month. You can choose from a mix of chicken, beef and pork. You don’t select your actual cuts so each month is a bit of a surprise. There are also optional add-ons like bacon, breakfast sausage, currently salmon and other goodies. Expect to spend around $130 a box.
What We Chose
I currently get the mixed box (chicken, pork, beef) and get it delivered every other month. Sometimes I’ll include an add on like nitrate free bacon or salmon. ButcherBox often includes freebies with sign up and I signed up at a great time–every box for the lifetime of my membership includes 2 pounds of beef for free (more on that below).
Is it Worth It?
Simply put, YES. I guess we don’t consume a ton of meat at home. The every other month box lasts us the full two months. And typically we a few items leftover in our freezer for the following month. While the cost is more than what I’d spend at the grocery store on meat, I love knowing that I’m getting high quality, grass-fed, antibiotic free meat. When I used to shop for meat I’d never know what to select. I’d often choose the middle of the road option, not the cheapest, not the most expensive. When MM shopped for our meat, he would usually go for a cheaper option. Sure, our meals tasted good before, but honestly things taste better with the high quality meat from ButcherBox. And this way I know I’m putting high quality ingredients into my body.
Will We Continue?
Again, it’s a yes! I really thought we’d try it once and I’d go back to buying meat at Trader Joe’s. But this is easier! I love not having to think about buying meat at the grocery store, and it’s nice to know our freezer is always stocked with something. Plus, it’s kind of fun to get new cuts of meat and figure out how to prepare them (which I typically leave to MM, but I think he finds it fun!).
How to Sign Up
I’m a fan and if you’re trying to cook more at home and use better quality ingredients, I think you might be a fan as well. I mentioned that there are typically freebies when you sign up, and right now there’s a REALLY good one! It’s the same deal I signed up with a couple of months back–2 lbs of ground beef free with every box for the lifetime of your subscription. Full disclosure, I also benefit with you sign up. So let’s share in the goodness. HERE is a special link to sign up (it’s an affiliate link, thank you!).
Just a Little Bit More
For the record, this is not sponsored and I have no relationship with ButcherBox aside from being a customer and a fan. I love sharing healthy options with my readers and that’s why I’ve decided to showcase this brand. If you give it a try (or are already a member), let me know what you think!
