Self care is a major buzzword these days. What is it? Is it bubble baths, going for long walks, getting weekly massages? It can be a million different things for different people. If you’re not sure how to get into a proper self-care routine, especially if you live in a big city, Michelle Cady’s Self-Care in the City is an amazing place to start.
To back up, let me tell you a bit about Michelle. Michelle and I first crossed path years ago through the fitness scene. We both worked at Equinox and were similarly Instagramming/blogging about how to live a healthy and balanced life in one of the craziest cities in the world. We’re both graduates of IIN and I’ve been following Michelle’s incredible journey from former finance executive, to personal trainer, to health and wellness coach and author.
I met up with Michelle recently and from that coffee date and from reading her book, I can say we’re totally on the same wavelength. I’m bummed we didn’t meet in our early 20s when we both lived in NYC because we clearly have the same values and ideas when it comes to wellness and self-care.
Michelle has navigated the challenges of healthy living in NYC and pulls together a wealth of knowledge in her newly released book Self-Care in the City. I’ve been reading this wellness bible and love all the tips and tricks that Michelle shares. Here’s a bit more about Self-Care in the City.
Who Should Read this Book
In the book Michelle talks a lot about New York City, but don’t discount this book if you’re from another city. Michelle’s lived in NYC for 10 years so that’s where she gets her inspiration, but it’s applicable to other city dwellers as well. I lived in NYC for 9 years and can relate to many of the experiences she shares in the book, particularly during my time in New York. That aside, so many of the tips come in handy in my current life in Barcelona.
This is the wellness book every woman in her 20s and early 30s needs. If you straight up don’t feel like your best self and you want to make a change to get to that better self, this book has got you covered. I think we’ve all felt a sort of wellness slump in our lives at some point and need a spark of inspiration. This book is full of ways to get inspired to make changes for the better. Especially during those post-college years, NYC life (& city living in general) can be challenging on many levels. I think my 24 year old self could have learned a lot from this book.
What You Can Expect to Get Out of the Book
This book is FULL of ideas. 100 of them to be exact. Some of the tips you may already know and practice, some you may know but have forgotten to do in a while and others will be totally new to you. I love that there’s something for everyone. The tips are totally doable. Michelle doesn’t suggest crazy health and wellness changes, she makes everything very approachable and also budget-friendly.
How to Read the Book
Self-Care in the City is split into three sections: Nutrition, Fitness & Wellness. If one topic speaks more to you or is a place you struggle, head straight to that section. You don’t have to read the book in order, feel free to jump around and grab a bit of knowledge here and there. In fact, Michelle recommends reading the book a little bit at a time. Read a few ideas, put the book down, come back a week or a month later and read a bit more. It’s best in small doses as to not get overwhelmed with all the information. The 100 ways to self-care are written in bite-size form so you get right to the point.
How to Implement Self-Care Into Your Life
Small steps are the best steps. The book covers nutrition, fitness and wellness. Don’t expect to make 180 degree changes in all of those areas of your life overnight. Trying to implement 100 changes in a short period of time would be crazy. And truly, all 100 ideas aren’t going to be for everyone. As you journey through the book, mark the things that really strike you. Make small changes and see how even the smallest changes can make a huge impact on your overall wellness and happiness.
Self-Care in the City is available on Amazon and I highly recommend you check it out. But wait! Michelle’s giving away a book to a lucky reader / Instagram follower, so head to @MichelleFitVista today to enter!
