After getting helped out of the Hudson, we were off on a 700 yard run (barefoot and in a wetsuit!) to the transition zone. This is the spot where you have to get that wetsuit off quickly (thanks Pam cooking spray!), throw on your bike shoes, helmet, sunglasses and biking gloves, unrack your bike, walk it out of the zone and onto the course. I didnt practice this much so I can probably improve the timing. Once on the bike route, I was off on a 26 mile ride up the closed-off Westside Highway. We rode way way way uptown (300th street? I have no clue, there were no mile markings on this portion of the race), then back down to 57th street, then back up to 72nd to where we had picked our bikes up. Here’s me as I began my ride, yelling at my family standing by:
The bike ride was really enjoyable and quite scenic for an urban race. I get nervous on downhills going too fast so I hopefully will get over this and can improve my time. I also was nervous from all the broken down riders I saw along the way. Before the race I quickly learned how to change a flat tire but if it really came down to it, I’m not sure I’d be able to do it. There were 7 people going up and down the route to help if anyone got a flat but luckily I made it through without any bike troubles.
