Today I went on my first century (100 mile) bike ride with nyccentury.org. The ride started at 110th street at 6am sharp. With the questionable weather, I was extremely unprepared wearing only a tank top and shorts. The first half of the ride was great, although a bit cloudy.
Around mile 60 is where things really got rough and the rain came in. It was FREEZING and we were riding for 4 hours in the downpour. By the end of the ride I thought I was going to die. The entire thing took an amazing 13 hours and ended up being 118 miles.
Genniva and I deemed our riding team as “Team Turtle” due to our slow and safe pace. While the ride wasn’t too hilly, the rain made for slick streets and bridges. Luckily we made it home safely, sopping wet and covered in mud. Not sure when the next century I’ll do is…that was quite a day. Here was what we saw along the ride:
- Ride from North Central Park down to City Hall
- Ride across the Brooklyn Bridge, through Prospect Park and other parts of Brooklyn
- Head over to Coney Island along the water
- Ride by Rockaway beach and all around Queens
- Pass Asotria, head over to the Bronx
- Ride through the Bronx and into Harlem
- Return back to 110th street in Central Park
Calories Burned During the Ride: 2,000+
Calories Consumed Via Peanut Butter Sandwiches along the Ride: 5 Billion
Some shots from the ride (more to come)
First stop along the way

After about 40 miles I was still sleepy so we took a little stop at 7-11. Genniva and I immediately perked up, I swear this stuff works!

A little stretch at a red light.

Biggest let down of the day: poor food options at the rest stops.

Second to last stop in Astoria.
