Morning Workout: Run + Strength

November 4, 2011

This morning my neighbor Sara and I had a great workout, I recommend you try it! Waking up at 6am is always rough (even after doing it 4-5 days a week for 4 years it’s still a challenge!), so knowing that I had plans to meet a friend forced me out of bed.

We started our workout with a 4 mile run through Central Park. A bonus of running there this weekend is they are setting up for Sunday’s marathon so you get a little preview of what the racers will run through. Our route started at West 72nd and went up and around the Resevoir, then back home. This was the first time I’ve done that run in complete darkness, and I wouldn’t suggest doing it alone. It’s a little creepy, but with a friend it’s fine. If you are alone, stick to the main loop as it was more populated at the early hour.

Our run landed us right at the NYSC on West 73rd- there we did a short circuit that I found on Shape Magazine’s website. We did four different moves*, for 1 minute each. That counted as one set. We did two sets- so the entire thing took only 8 minutes (plus quick breaks between moves). See below for screen grabs of each move. Put this on your phone and bring them to the gym for easy reference as you move through the circuit. To spice it up, next time I am going to add jumping jacks or running in place in between each move (Sara, get excited!).

*Shape’s circuit actually has 5 moves, but we took one out.
