Weekend at Okemo Mountain

January 26, 2015

Every winter a group of friends and I head north for some winter fun. We try out different mountains and this weekend we headed to Vermont for a weekend at Okemo. We’d skied there over the last couple of years and loved the mountain so it was worth another visit.

Ten of us (plus two dogs and a baby) stayed about 20 minutes from the mountain and went for two days at Okemo Mountain. Luckily we had amazing conditions. It’s always a risk on the east coast but the conditions were great and it wasn’t even that crowded. We skied on Friday which was pretty much empty. If you can get away from the office and ski on a weekday, it’s the way to go.

Okemo just opened a new chair lift, it has padded, heated seats and a bubble to shied the wind. It’s fancy and we spent all of Friday riding this lift. With no crowds there was no reason to venture away from this comfort. It’s seriously amazing.

Our group was a range of ski levels and we were all able to find slopes to fit our level. I challenged myself on blues and blacks for most of the weekend. With a couple of inches of fresh snow and empty slopes it was a good time to push your boundaries.

After a few hours we headed next to the slopes to Tom’s Loft Tavern, an apres ski dive bar. We got a ridiculous serving of nachos because skiing works up a serious appetite!

Next up we were back at our house to relax before a fancy dinner at Solo. If you’re looking for an upscale homey experience, check out this Farm & Table restaurant. It was down the road from our house and really nice dining experience.  We were greeted with a warm fire and very tasty food.

Saturday we went back to the mountain and because it was the weekend it was slightly more busy but considering how perfect the weather was with another fresh inch or two of snow, I was surprised that it still wasn’t that crowded. We ventured to different parts of the mountain and our wait for chair lifts was never too long. We lunched in the lodge and stayed up at the mountain until it closed at 4pm.

We made a quick stop at Green Mountain Sugar House to load up on a pure maple syrup, Vermont-themed souvenirs/treats and these delish Maple Creemees. Omg yum. It doesn’t matter that it’s cold in Vermont, make sure to get one of these.

We went back home to cook a Mexican fiesta, play games and relax.

[I think every ski weekend requires a Mexican night]

Other highlights of the weekend included playing with baby Reed and watching doggies Ollie and Porter solidify their best-friendshipness.

This weekend was a great one and I can’t wait to head back out to the mountains in two weeks for another ski getaway!
