Reader Question: Healthy Margaritas for Cinco de Mayo

May 2, 2013

I just received a great question from a Shapin’ Up reader- Cinco de Mayo is approaching! How can we make “healthy” margaritas?

I love a good marg just as much as the next girl, but wasting 500 calories per drink is not my style. Here are some tips for a guilt-free marg:

At a Bar: If you’re ordering one of these while out, ask for this instead of a margarita off the menu: lime, tequila and a splash of Cointreau, served over ice.

The reason most margs at bars are so calorie-dense is from the sour mix (LOTS of sugar). So if you remove that, you should be ok. If you want to go the extra mile, ask for no salt on your glass (salt = bloating). Personally, the salt is a MUST for my margaritas, so that isn’t something I can give up, but if you can, go ahead and skip it.

At Home: If you’re hosting a party or mixing your own drinks, you can use the recipe from above or if you want something a little more unique, here are some recipes for do-it-yourself-deliciousness:

The key thing to keep in mind with  margaritas is skip the sour mix or adding sugar or syrup. Instead, use fresh fruit for sweetness or a lot of fresh lime juice to get that tart taste. I’m happy to report that many restaurants now serve “skinny margaritas” so next time you’re out and craving a margarita, ask if they have em!

¡Olé!
