I did a lot of research on what’s appropriate to wear before we jetted off to Marrakech, Morocco. I’m so thankful for the tips I gathered from other travel blogs that I thought I’d share some of my own.
Packing the right items are key as a woman visiting a conservative country. I find it best to lean on the side of caution and went for a more covered up style when visiting Morocco. There were plenty of girls running around in short shorts and tank tops, but I felt more comfortable with flowy clothes that covered my knees and shoulders.
What to Pack for a Weekend in Morocco
Flowy Pants: Depending on the time of year, you may get hit with some seriously hot temperatures. Flowy, loose pants are the perfect item to feel covered up but also will keep you comfortable and cool. I like the Lululemon Keep it Classic Crop and the Oysho Flowery Pants.
Flowy Tops: Same thing goes for flowy tops. Many travelers will want to have their shoulders covered but the flowier the better, especially in the summertime.
Jumpsuit: This is the perfect item for dinner out. You’re mostly covered and also comfortable.
Long Skirt or Maxi Dress: Continuing with that loose fitting, comfort theme.
Versatile Scarf: If you’re skipping long sleeve tops, a light, versatile scarf is key to have on hand. It will protect you from the strong sun and will allow you to cover up when visiting certain attractions. Go for a neutral color so one scarf matches everything, like this one from Natura.
Comfortable Shoes (sandals & close toed): You’re going to do a lot of walking in Marrakech. The roads are uneven and dirty. You’ll want a pair of close toed shoes for your longer walks. Then you’ll also want a good pair of sandals for pool side time or shorter walks.
Dark Colored Two-Piece Bathing Suit: If you’re going to visit a hammam and plan to wear a bathing suit during your experience, come prepared. Opt for a dark colored two-piece bathing suit. Dark because they will be rubbing you with mud-that’s one quick way to ruin a white bathing suit. A two piece because during the spa treatment they’ll be scrubbing your skin and massaging you. The less skin covered by a bathing suit, the better. In some hammams you’ll be naked, but if you’re traveling with friends/family and aren’t a naked around your peers kinda person, bring that bathing suit 😉
Sunscreen: It’s going to be hot and sunny, likely regardless of what time of year you visit. Make sure you’ve got sunscreen on hands throughout the day. You may spend hours away from your hotel and will want to reapply, especially if you’re lunching outside in the strong sun.
Sunglasses: See above, it’s going to be hot and sunny!
Bag with a Zipper: I’m not sure how bad pick-pocketing really is in Marrakech, but my tip for all travel (and well, life in general), is to always have a bag with zipper. Hide your wallet and cell phone deep within the bag to keep it protected as your journey through the crowded streets.
And of course, leave some room in your suitcase for all the things you’re bound to buy at the souk!
