It almost, but not quite, has been feeling like summer in NYC. The temperatures are starting to rise but some days have been downright chilly (side note: I’m always cold so even a slight breeze and I need layers). But hey, today the high is 91! That is legit steamy, and this weekend while I’m racing in the NYRR Oakley 10k we’ve got a projected high of 89. You know what this means, time to update your shorts wardrobe!
I’m picky when it comes to my fitness apparel. Yes, I want to look good while working out (reminder that I’m an instructor and on any given day I might have 40+ people watching me workout) but beyond that, the right pair of shorts can make or break a workout or race. For longer runs, chaffing may seem unavailable but if you get the right pair for your body, maybe you can get through it with minimal or no rub.
I’ve been testing various brands and styles to bring you the best of the best. I’ll share my top picks in this post and then in the coming weeks I’ll share the full outfit details from the brands I love. Without further ado, let’s get this started!
These shorts are super light and breathable. There is no rubbing along my thighs and there is plenty of room for my legs to move and groove without feeling constricted. The wide waist band is flattering and on the looser side; there’s nothing worse than a waistband digging into your stomach during a run (or anytime in life really…). Added bonus is the secure back zippered pocket that is big enough to fit keys and your ID. The shorts have built-in briefs but they are a bit lose so you may still want to wear undies, your call. You can tell these shorts are designed for a real woman’s body who wants a running.
Lululemon Run Shorts (check in-store or see similar online)
Many Lululemon shorts run on the skimpier side so if you don’t mind that style, these are a great option. First, the color and detailing are too-cute, this pair has mesh, neon, floral, what more do you need? The waistband is cozy enough that the shorts aren’t shifting around on your waist but it’s not squeezing you in. These feel a bit bootylicious while running but I don’t mind it (sorry for the person running behind me, maybe you mind it) and have built-in briefs.
C9 Champion Woven Run Short, $16.99
I’m featuring 2 pairs of C9 Champion shorts because they are so dang cheap, you might as well get both of them. Every time I try C9 gear, I like it more and more, they keep stepping up their game when it comes to fashion and function. These shorts have both. They have built in briefs and a small inner pocket for keys. Again, these shorts have that wide waist band (let’s be real, shorts aren’t going to make it on this list if the waist band isn’t wide) and a lot of movement for my ladies with muscular thighs (myself included in this category).
Fabletics Suva Run Short II, $24.95
Initially drawn to these for the pattern and fun colors, they stand up funcationally-speaking as well. They are on the shorter side while giving enough coverage and still give your legs room to move. No chaffing in this pair, they move with you. There is a tiny pocket inside, enough to fit your keys and have built in briefs. The waist band is thick and comfy and with the drawstring you can tighten as needed. I know I said I’d talk full outfits later but let me tell you now, the tank my shorts are paired with is the softest everrrr.
Roxy Line Up Short, $38
Each pair is made from recycled materials (the equivalent of wearing 7 plastic bottles!) which is cool, but obviously says nothing about how they perform. Good news, I love em! As you may expect from Roxy, these are water-friendly so you can takes these from your run to the beach. I don’t have any runs to the ocean scheduled (although that sounds quite nice), alternatively I suggest these for rainy runs, the waistband will stay in place and there are mesh panels for ventilation and water drainage.
You may have noticed that all of these shorts share a common theme, they are roomy enough in the thighs to avoid feeling constricted and they have a wide, flattering waist band. This style has been my go-to for running and my favorite for races.
Another style I’m playing around with are spandex style tight shorts, like these from Athleta and these from Lululemon, once I go on proper runs in these shorts I’ll fill you in on my favorites. Until then, don’t let the warm temps keep you from a good run. Grab your favorite shorts and get moving!
