Ironman 70.3: 12 Weeks Until Race Weekend & Mixing it Up

May 26, 2015

My training is continuing at an ok pace as we get closer to race weekend. With my less intense and more manageable training plan, Super Simple Ironman 70.3, I’m able to keep up with a lot of the scheduled workouts, but still can’t seem to fit all 9 in each week (wonder why, um 9 workouts a week is a lot!).

This past week was filled with fitness, but also a chance to try new things, mix it up and even relax a little bit. On Saturday my scheduled workout was a 7 mile run and to motivate myself, I ended my run at Y7 Yoga (studio review coming tomorrow). There was no way I couldn’t finish my 7 miles, I pre-paid for my yoga class and planned to meet a friend at the studio so they only way to get there on time was to keep running for those 7 miles.

Post-run and yoga I spent some time in Central Park to take in the perfect NYC weather with Meaghan, Evann, 2 Matts & and a few other friends.

On Saturday I was supposed to bike 25 miles but wanted to take it a bit further and did 40 by riding over the GW bridge on to 9W, basically the only way to get in a lot of miles in NYC without going around Central Park a million times. If you take this route, make sure to stop at Palisades Market for an iced coffee and a snack. We hit the market then turned around and headed back to the city.

After that ride I was supposed to swim but I was completely exhausted, no chance of getting in the pool. In fact, I spent the rest of the day being exhausted.

Monday was spent hiking up by the Delaware Water Gap with friends. This is not part of my training plan and maybe I should have been running and swimming but a chance to escape the city for an afternoon is not one you can pass up. Hiking is still a workout!

But now the long weekend is over and it’s time to get back to my scheduled plan. This weekend I’ll be out of town and unsure of how I’ll get in my long workouts and what exactly those will be. I’m supposed to bike 35 miles, run 9 and swim 1,400 yards. TBD on how that’s going to pan out. So here’s a look at the agenda so far:

  • Tuesday: 40 minute cycle, swim 1,000 yards
  • Wednesday: 40 minute cycle, conditioning
  • Thursday: 4.5 mile run, swim 1,000 yards
  • Friday: 40 minute cycle
  • Saturday: ?
  • Sunday: ?
