A couple of weeks ago I wrote about my indecision with running the Detroit half marathon and asked for your advice for my weird cramping calf muscle. Thank you to everyone who sent their tips through! For those that said maybe I don’t stretch enough, you’re probably right. A trip to the physical therapist or some sort of taping situation may be in my future. The week leading into race day I took it easy, didn’t run and got a massage. Even so, I was nervous to run. There was still a small feeling that something was off. The pain only comes when I run and I knew that running 13.1 without proper training would not be a good situation. I didn’t know for sure what the outcome would be, but there’s a good chance it could be a real, more serious injury.
My friends Scott and Anna were still doing the race but Lauren and myself had signed up and weren’t going through with it. We figured we’d visit the race expo anyways because at the very least, we might as well get our race shirt (basically a $100 shirt). I actually love the shirt so I’m glad we went but it was sad to see the race course knowing I wouldn’t be participating.
I had to remind myself that it’s not worth a potential injury that could keep me from working out for months. There will be other races that I can train and race in. For me, it was a hard decision but I know I made the right one by not running. Lauren and I agreed that one day we’d do the Detroit Half Marathon together, but this time around we stuck to the sidelines and cheered on our friends.
[yay! we signed up for a half marathon!]
[boo! we aren’t going to run it!]
