Yesterday I was fortunate enough to check out a preview of the 2013 IRONMAN World Championship coverage, airing on NBC this Saturday, November 16 at 4:30.
I went into the screening thinking it would be about the amazing pro athletes kicking ass in the race, and sure it had some of that, but it was so much more. The special includes stories of the age group athletes competing and it is beyond inspiring. From the father of a Sandy Hook victim, to an amputee who had completed the race multiple times before losing her leg, to a 78-year old woman fighting to the finish, these stories will have you in tears.
You won’t be crying the entire time. There are also light-heated stories like the experiences of NFL MVP Hines Ward and scary chef Gordon Ramsay who took their first swing at the 140.6 mile course.
Aside from the emotional and amazing stories, the footage of Kona and the two thousand athletes is breathtaking. Even though I already watched it, I’m planning to tune-in again on Saturday for a second look.
I’ve been considering an Ironman 70.3 and this really has me eager to do one and then maybe even a full Ironman which I swore I’d never want to do.
Watch a preview here and tune-in on Saturday!
