My 15-Mile Run in Pictures

After work last night I headed out for my weekly long run. Typically this would happen Saturday morning but I wanted to get it out of the way early so the weekend can be full of relaxation.

My route took me around the lower perimeter of Manhattan, a run I’ve never done before. The nice thing about long runs in the city is you can explore new areas and even though the city seems pretty compact, there are a variety of interesting routes you can take. This particular route took me along the water, by some beautiful bridges and had a pretty consistent breeze throughout. My coworker John who is also training for the NYC Marathon joined me for the first 10 miles which was much needed; running with someone new is so nice since you have lots to talk about and in a few hours you can learn a lot about each other. So refreshing!

For the full 15-miles my pace ranged from as low as 8:30 to as high as 11:23 (kept getting stuck at red lights towards the end) and the overall average pace was 9:32, not too shabby.

I ended my run at the EMS shop on the Upper West Side to restock my Nuun tabs. These little electrolyte tabs are only 6-8 calories each and add a hint of flavor to your water, just enough that mid-run it is the most delicious and refreshing thing you can imagine.

After restocking I headed home to find MM manning the grill out back. He had prepared the most amazing post-run dinner: grilled salmon steaks, corn on the cob, grilled onions and grilled peaches (which I am newly obsessed with).

Not pictured: my painful chafing, more on this later.

Overall I was happy with the run. I won’t say it was my best run ever but I felt pretty solid throughout and wasn’t ready to pass out at the end. I woke up a bit sore but nothing too serious.

All I have left for Week 6 of training is a 5-miler this weekend. Moving right along!
