Beach Weekend vs. Long Run

August 21, 2013

This weekend I’m heading to the beach and while I love running along the beach in the summertime, running 15 miles (which according to my marathon schedule is what’s in store for me) on the beach ain’t gonna happen.

Running barefoot on the sand is a bit more challenging then regular road running; muscles you don’t normally use are put to the test when running on unsteady ground. I love the mixture of this challenge with the breeze coming off the water, plus waves splashing you as much or as little as you want. So while I love beach running, 15 miles of this seems unbearable slash impossible.

One of my goals for marathon training is to complete every single long run. I may miss a few of the short runs here and there, but if I can complete all of the long runs I will feel more confident come race day. This week, to avoid 15 miles of beach running, I’m hoping to get my long run done during the week so I can save a relaxed 5-miler for the weekend.

Weather pending (currently the forecast is 30% chance of storms tomorrow, let’s hope it holds off), here is tomorrow’s scheduled route (courtesy of MapMyRun.com), beginning at my office and ending on the UWS:

Looks fun, right?
