Tri One On Race Recap 6.16.13
Yesterday marked the first triathlon of the year! It began with a super early morning wake-up (alarm went off at 4:15am) so we could drive out to Long Island for the 7:40am start. After setting up our transition zones I suited up and hit the beach with my Team in Training girls for the sprint tri. Here’s a quick breakdown:
SWIM: The swim was a half mile along the beach. The water was chilly and salty but other than that, it wasn’t so bad. The swim always makes me nervous and because everyone in my age group started at once (50 people) there was a lot of getting kicked and kicking other people. I tried to stay calm and focused on my stroke. My coached swim sessions are apparently paying off because even in the panic of a crowded swim I was able to find my steady stroke and keep it the entire time. I tried to sight and stay in line and don’t think I swam too far off course at any point. The swim ended with a run from the beach to our transition zone…and off to the bike.
BIKE: The ride was 11 miles (a 2 mile loop) through neighborhoods. It was a bumpy ride to say the least- tons of potholes the entire time. I kept a nice strong steady pace (for me anyways!) and luckily didn’t get a flat tire given the nasty roads. And then it was back into the transition zone for the run.
RUN: This was supposedly a 3 mile run, made up of two loops including a steep incline into a park and then looping around by the beach. I say it was supposedly 3 miles because if it was in fact 3 miles, my pace comes out to 7:07. I like to think that I’m a fast runner but this seems too fast to be accurate. I kept a good pace but I doubt it was actually THAT fast. After the second loop it was off to the finish line!
Overall, it was a fun race! It was pretty well-organized as far as small races go. There was only ONE mile marker on the entire course (which said 1 mile at a random point during the run which I think was inaccurate). I would have liked to see more mile markers and a clearer course outline (sometimes knowing where to go since it was 2 loops was confusing). I was very happy with how I did and makes me feel slightly more prepared for the NYC Olympic Distance Tri coming up in a couple of weeks.
My stats:
- Swim: 13:54
- Bike: 36:25
- Run: 21:22
- Total: 1:15:07
- Overall:192 out of 614
- My Division: 9 out of 49
Post-race we stopped at a local bagel shop for a celebratory carb-fest. After doing a few races solo, I’ve got to say it’s SO much more fun with this new-found group of fit friends.
Looking forward to doing another one soon!
