30 Day Yoga Challenge

January 10, 2013

#24 on my 30 Under 30 List is to complete a yoga challenge. Why a yoga challenge you ask? I hardly even like yoga, so why force myself to do it for 30 days? In theory, I think yoga is a wonderful practice. It’s good for your body, your mind and your aching muscles. I get antsy during yoga classes, thinking about how much harder I could be sweating if I were doing something else, but recently I’ve been adding more yoga to my workout schedule and while at best I only take 1 class per week (and let’s be real, often 0) and I am starting to see the appeal.

While 30 straight days of yoga may be overkill, I’m really curious how I will feel afterwards. Will I be in love with yoga? Will muscles I don’t normally use be stronger? Will my mind be quieter than normal (what does that mean? I’m not sure)? By the end of February I can answer these questions for you (and me).

To make this extra challenging, for 30 days straight I will be doing Bikram yoga. That’s 90-minutes of yoga done in a disgustingly sweaty room set to 105 degrees. Bikram is the one type of yoga that I leave the class feeling like I really worked hard so I’m pretty excited/terrified about this challenge. Keep in mind I don’t think I’ve taken a combined 30 Bikram yoga classes in my entire life, so who knows how this is going to turn out.

Bikram Yoga NYC studio runs a 30 day challenge which you can read about here. I’ll be doing this challenge along with 2 friends (although due to scheduling we won’t take all 30 classes together, but hopefully most of them!) and will keep you posted along the way (shoot me a message if you want to join for a class…or 30!). As you can see, this is very much written in permanent marker on my calendar: January 22 Begin Yoga Challenge.

Only 11 yoga-free days until the madness begins!
