Training for a Race while on a Vacation

February 29, 2012

Tomorrow at 6AM I’m boarding a plane and heading west for Santa Barbara and I CANNOT wait! Something I need to keep in mind is that I have a half marathon in approximately 17 days and can’t afford to take off 5 days from running just because I’m on vacation. I’m proud of myself for sticking pretty closely to a training program and I don’t plan to slack off now.

Here are my tips for keeping to a training schedule while on vacation:

  • Be Prepared: Check the weather and make sure you pack correctly. For CA I’ll be packing shorts and tank tops (as opposed to my 3-layer outfits for winter NYC runs) as well as my good running shoes. Packing workout clothes/sneakers can take up major suitcase space so I better put them to use!
  • Look Ahead: Today I’ve been researching where I can run outside. It’s always fun to run in a new area and see new scenery. This and This is what I’ve found for Santa Barbara. I’m also planning to hike one day.
  • Try Something New: Like a Running Tour! This sounds cool but not something I’ve actually tried (if you’ve tried one, how was it?)

How do you keep to your workout schedule while on vacation?
