On Friday evening I took Mat 57 at Physique 57, described as “a vigorous, energetic and updated form of Classical Pilates." The 60-minute class was pretty good, I liked the instructor and thought the moves were interesting and the time flew by. The facilities were nice, although I wasn’t really a fan of the carpeted studio. However, it wasn’t that challenging (and I’m a complete novice) and I did not leave feeling that I had a great work out and was not sore at all the following day.
While some people rave about these classes, I thought it was average. One of my biggest issues with it is that it is $35 a class and in order to really see results, you would probably have to take the class 3-5 times a week (a 10-class pack will set you back $300). I’ve taken classes at gyms that are just as good, and free with membership, and have given me a better post-workout feeling (sore muscles and lots of sweating). Many of the moves were similiar to regular Pilates and Total Body Conditioning.
The Physique 57 DVDs seem like a great alternative if you aren’t able to drop a lot of money and have some space for an at-home workout. If I get a chance to try these out I’ll let you know what I think!
