Learning the Rules

July 15, 2010

My triathlon research has consisted of buying one book and doing a couple of google searches. It’s time to get serious and learn the rules of this crazy race. No big deal, it’s only a TWENTY-FIVE page manual!  For every rule you violate you risk being disqualified or having time added on to your finish.

Below are some of the most commonly violated biking rules in triathlons:

  • Helmets must be used and buckled at all times when you are on a bicycle
  • You may receive no outside assistance during the race, except from medical officials
  • Transition areas must be properally set up with your bike returned to it’s upright position after the biking section
  • Drafting states that you must keep at least three bike lengths clear space between you and the cyclist in front. If you move into their zone, you must pass within 15 seconds
  • You must keep to the right hand side of the lane of travel unless passing. If you ride on the left side of the lane without passing you will get a blocking penalty.
