NYC MARATHON RACE RECAP PART III: After the Race

November 6, 2013

Here we are at the final part of NYC marathon round up, what I did and how I’m feeling post-race. I took Monday off of work since my walking was a little shaky. I woke up feeling super sore, stairs (specifically going down them) was the worst. I made sure to get up and walk around to help heal my muscles. Sitting for long periods of time was making the soreness worse.

First thing on the agenda was a decadent breakfast at The Smith with MM, my brother & Sam. Normally I’m an egg white omelet kinda girl, not this time! MM & I shared smoked salmon benedict:

& a croissant sandwich with apple smoked bacon, cheese and a fried egg:

After brunch I went to New York Running Company in Columbus Circle for free medal engraving and a free t-shirt, then I wandered into Central Park to check out the official marathon shop but I didn’t want anything (I’m all set with my free shirts and my new jacket). The one thing I DID buy was The New York Times because I’m in it!

I’ve been told you should do short easy runs in the days following the marathon to help heal your muscles but walking was hard enough. This morning was my first spin class after the race and it was rough. Instead of riding while I teach, I mostly walked around or stood on the bike. My muscles actually feel okay today but it’s my blisters that held me back. My feet are killing me and walking/riding was hard. I’m hoping tomorrow they aren’t so bad.

So now that it’s been a few days a lot of people are asking whether I’ll run another marathon. I really loved the NYC Marathon and I would do it again, but I’m not in a rush. I don’t plan to sign up for the 2014 race but maybe further into the future I will (& would likely do the 9+1 program again to ensure a spot). I would like to do a flatter marathon, potentially the Chicago Marathon because people seem to love that course. Again, probably not next year but maybe 2015.

While full marathons aren’t yet on my radar, plenty of other races are! For 2014 I’m planning to do the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in DC (March), The NYC Triathlon (August) and then hopefully a few other races sprinkled in between.

What’s on your race radar? Any that you recommend?
