Race Review: Central Park Conservancy Run for Central Park 4 Miler

July 16, 2012

This Saturday was race #8 in my quest for 9+1 in 2012. The 4-mile loop through Central Park was a pleasant one. It was hot, but since the race started at 8am it wasn’t too bad. Last week was a great week for my running. It has been a goal of mine to break an 8 minute mile pace (as noted, #14 on my list of 30 Things to do Before 30) and I’m happy to say I ran two sub-8 races twice in one week! Last Sunday I ran a 7:59 for the 10k portion of my triathlon and at Saturday’s Central Park race I managed a 7:52 pace, my speediest race to date.

The Run for Central Park was actually the very first NYRR sponsored race I ran in NYC when I was just a young intern living in the city for the summer. In 2005 I ran the race in 32:45 and this year I ran it in 31:26. It’s nice to see that in 7 years I’ve stayed quite consistent with my fitness level (becoming just a lil bit faster over the years).

After playing field hockey and running track in High School, I left competitive sports behind and mostly worked out to stay fit, not necessarily to break any records or get faster. This year I’ve really amped up my running and have stuck to race training programs better than I ever have before. I’m not planning on breaking any major records, just my own. I get quite competitive with myself and I’ve got to say, focusing on training and working out harder has really made a difference. I feel stronger and enjoy running much more than I ever have.
